London to Cape Town 2012 - Sam and Greg Newton (Australia)
The London to Cape Town World Cup Rally will endeavour to capture the spirit of the long distance World Cup Rallies of the 1970s.
The event is not designed as a tour but as a “press on” driver’s challenge with Time Trials and a time-schedule to be maintained every day. The ambition is to revive the kind of rallying last seen on the 1977 London to Sydney marathon.
There has never been a rally that has linked mainland Europe with a complete drive of the African Continent from top to bottom – in the past, wars, famines, border disputes have prevented this.

Our route from London will take in France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Syria and Jordan, with Aqaba being our first rest-stop. All of these countries have an infrastructure of national motor-sport Federations and local motor clubs and the intention is to provide a competitive timed section every day.
There is one leader-board, which will produce an outright winner, with trophies going to each crew member, plus awards for the crews who finish 2nd, and 3rd overall. In addition, awards will be presented to each crew-member who wins one of the 5 Classes – we are competing in Classic Cars over 2-litres, of a model-type in manufacture prior to 1986 in our 1980 Commodore VC, a much more suitable car than our trusty 1952 Holden 48-215. We envisage that she will well suit the long fast dirt passages of up to 1200 kms in one day.
We plan to raise funds to support the activities of the RSPCA in Australia throughout our journey and encourage you to follow us along the way. Your support through a donation per kilometre or a set monetary amount would be most appreciated. Please note that 100% of what you donate will go to the activates of the RSPCA in their efforts to prevent cruelty to animals.
Distance Pledge
How far will we get? In last year’s Peking to Paris Rally dozens of cars ended up being trucked or just shipped home.
We are confident that we will get there so get behind us and the RSPCA by pledging from 1 to 10 cents per kilometre of the 14,400 km journey.
We will shortly be setting up a list of Supporters below under each category and will come back to you on our return to Australia to complete your donation.
